Meet the New SPSPotlight Co-Editors

By Sofia Kousi and Luke Wilmshurst

Editors’ vision

Our aim is to help SPSPotlight become a platform for practical advice and guidance, and to encourage open dialogue between graduate students, undergraduates, and professional academics. We are excited to focus on a range of themes, including facilitating academic collaborations, ways to work more effectively, improving the PhD experience, and offering advice to help with the job search process. We would like to make this newsletter a useful resource, and welcome any suggestions and contributions you have on whatever topics are most interesting and important to you.

Sofia Kousi

4th year consumer behavior PhD Candidate, Athens University of Economics and Business

My Research: My research combines social and positive psychology in the context of consumer behavior. I am investigating the relationship between happiness and consumption, identifying the aspects of our material and experiential purchases that contribute most to well-being. Additionally, I am looking into how different purchase motivations affect well-being.

About me: I am originally from Greece, but I have lived in the US, UK, Germany, Italy and Romania. Prior to joining the PhD program I worked in market research and brand strategy. In my next life, I’d like to be an astronomer. Or a pastry chef.

Luke Wilmshurst

Currently completing a Masters degree in Psychology at the University of London, Birkbeck College.

My Research:  Broadly, my research is focused in social cognition, with a special interest in areas including judgment and decision-making, and mental time travel (e.g. time discounting, prospective memory) in a variety of applied contexts.

About me:  I am originally from Canada, but I have also lived in France, Switzerland, Germany, and the UK. Before graduate school, I worked for several years as a strategy consultant, senior risk analyst, and leading research teams focused on decision-making of board members and senior executives. In my free time, I am an avid distance runner, freelance writer, and a huge hockey fan.
