The first-ever SPSP-sponsored summer workshop, which is organized by Sandra Matz (Columbia Business School), Peter J. Rentfrow (Cambridge University, and John T. Jost (New York University) will focus on “Big Data in Personality and Social Psychology.”

From Friday, August 2 to Sunday, August 4, 2019 we will combine elements of a scientific conference and a hands-on workshop, addressing issues of (a) data acquisition, including means of harvesting data from Twitter and other social media platforms as well as mobile technologies such as smartphones and wearables, (b) data analysis, including techniques for semantic analysis, feature-extraction, spatial analysis, and machine learning, and (c) data interpretation, including theoretical applications to the study of individual differences, social influence, social network structure and function, and other traditional and nontraditional areas of social, personality, and political psychology.

Leading figures in the “big data” revolution from academia and industry will give keynote talks and oversee practical workshops that will advance your own teaching and research programs. Invited participants include Jeff Hancock and Gabriella Harari, both from the Department of Communication at Stanford University, Maarten Bos from Snapchat, and Jamie Pennebaker (creator of LIWC, Linguistic Inquiry Word Count software program) from the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas. We will also sponsor a data blitz, poster session, and receptions with lots of opportunities for informal professional networking.

No previous experience with these research techniques is required.

Come and join us, whether you are already an expert in computational social science, including the qualitative and quantitative analysis of social media data, or would like to become one!
