SPSP is releasing a report, which outlines the demographic makeup of the Society's Board of Directors and committee volunteers from 2018 through 2023. The report also includes member demographic information from 2018-2022, indicating how each group's representation among leadership compares to SPSP's membership overall.

This is the latest effort that SPSP is taking as part of an effort to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism by identifying and understanding which groups are underrepresented. SPSP believes that this is an important step toward fostering a more welcoming and equitable field in the future.

The data focuses on the following demographic categories:

  • Racial or Ethnic Identity
  • First-Generation
  • Disability Identity
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Gender
  • Nationality

The following demographics are self-reported in the SPSP member profile. Some data may not be complete as our demographic options have changed since 2018. Please note that SPSP has not finalized member demographic data for 2023, so the current report includes member data from 2018-2022.

For some demographic charts, we grouped several identities together to reduce identifiable information and allow for comparisons over time. We understand there are drawbacks to grouping identities together, we've opted to do so here as a first step toward transparency and that we also explore the data internally in more nuanced and intersectional ways.

The data shared for each demographic includes the:

  • Leadership group (e.g. Board Members or Committee Members)
  • Full membership (e.g. Membership)
  • Individuals who applied for the leadership group (e.g. Applicants)
  • Individuals selected to be on the elections slate (e.g. Slate)
